April updates

We are hoping to hold an in-person neighborhood meeting on May 22 and plan to invite our new city council representatives and the mayor to come and meet the neighbors. Details will be emailed as soon as they are finalized. Until then, please save the date.

The city is updating its decades-old zoning codes, so we are also inviting someone to talk about that process at the May 22 meeting. You can learn more about the rezoning project at https://forwardlacrosse.org/

This Saturday there are two community events. There's a Garden Talk and Seed Swap from 10 a.m. to noon at the La Crosse Public Library. And, from 9 to noon, The Exchange is holding a Donation Day, They accept gently used items such as beds, mattresses, small couches, basic kitchen and bathroom items. Items must be CLEAN, FULLY FUNCTIONAL AND IN GREAT CONDITION! No stains, rips, odors or pet hair. If in doubt, ask yourself: "Would I give this to my best friend?" They have the right to refuse any items that don't meet their quality standards so save yourself a trip by checking their website for a full list of qualifying donations at theExchangelacrosse.org

Habitat for Humanity is hosting Neighbors Day on April 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ,and they are looking for volunteers. Usually the work involves raking, helping clean up yards, washing windows, etc. Sign up at this link: https://app.giveffect.com/campaigns/36948-neighbors-day-2025-volunteer

The Earth Fair will be on Sunday, April 27 at Myrick Park. The #4 bus, the one that rolls through our neighborhood, will be free on that day and will divert slightly to drop people at and pick people up from Myrick. Get more Earth Fair information at https://www.sustaininstitute.com/earthfairlacrosse

The city and Green Homeowners United are still signing up homeowners and landlords (duplex) to get a free Focus on Energy home energy assessment and learn how to qualify for upgrades that will save energy, save money, and make homes more comfortable. There are income limits for eligibility but they are fairly high (1 person max (line 9 on 1040) $55,100; 2 people, $63,000/ 3 people, $70,850 ...). Check eligibility requirements at Focus on Energy (https://focusonenergy.com/income-qualified) and get details of the program and learn how to sign up at https://www.lacrosseclimateactionplan.org/news/free-energy-audits-and-upgrades-available-for-la-crosse-low-income-homeowners

Finally, BrightAction is working with the city to help residents learn about and take climate action. We received this invitation: Become a Neighborhood Ambassador! Are you passionate about building a stronger, more connected, and climate-ready Hintgen neighborhood? Join the Neighborhood Ambassador Program and help lead your community through a 4-part, one-hour meeting series focused on climate solutions and emergency preparedness. As an ambassador, you’ll receive training, resources, and ongoing support from BrightAction Communities to make it easy to bring these conversations to your friends, neighbors, or community groups. You don’t need to be an expert—we’ll give you everything you need to confidently guide your neighbors through meaningful, practical actions that build local resilience. This program is part of the Carbon Free La Crosse Challenge and is offered in partnership with the City of La Crosse. Want to learn more or get involved? National Night Out August 6

Join your Hintgen neighbors and members and friends of Good Shepherd Church on Tuesday, August 6 for a potluck and celebration of National Night Out from 5bto 7 p.m. at the Church. Enter the Birch Street door.

We'll supply hotdogs (meat & non-meat), buns (gluten-free available), condiments, and beverages. If you want, bring a salad, snack, side, or dessert to share (not required!)
